No matter how hard we try to appear as though we’ve “got it together” and in control, we will never be perfect. (Im)perfect is my way of telling you it’s actually good to be a little off, a little or even a lot!
I had a long career in graphic design. One of the first lessons I learned was that illustrations and layouts that were “perfect” became visibly sterile and uninteresting. I’m talking about lines that are too clean; colours that are too smooth; or text that is lined up too neatly: everything too “in its place”. It all just ends up lacking personality.
I read a story recently about Jason Momoa that talked about how he was bullied as a kid for being “a pretty boy”. One night he reportedly was in a bar and was hit in the eye with a pint glass which left him with a scar. From that moment he became visibly more interesting and appealing for the screen (although I think he was visibly interesting before!). My point is: imperfection is what makes us perfectly fascinating! Just don’t go out and give yourself a scar on purpose, okay?
